Your body language has a much bigger role than you might think at an interview, and therefore you need to be aware of it from the moment you step through the door. Luckily for you, we’ve put together a list of do’s and don’ts so you can become the ultimate body language ninja – HI-YA!
Slouching can give the effect of looking a little too casual. Now, we’re not saying to you need to sit ridged with your hands on your lap, but you should always be aware of your posture. Sit up straight and lean in when asked questions – this emphasises your interest and engagement.
Do: Use your hands
Touching your fingertips together can suggest authority and using your hands subtly is a nice way to emphasise points. However, both of these tips are better in moderation. Try not to wave your hands around too much, you could come across as nervous and flustered.
Don’t: Touch your face
People who touch their face, twiddle their hair or rub their eyes can come across untrustworthy and disinterested – as does sitting with your arms folded. Make sure all your personal gestures are open and expressive.
Annie wasn’t lying when she said: “You’re never fully dressed without a smile” – so smile! Smile, nod appropriately and laugh when the interviewer does. You want to show you have a personality and that you’re paying attention.
Try not to tap your fingertips on your chair arms or the table in front of you and try not to become restless in your seat - It’ll make you seem bored and impatient.
Try and match the positive body language of the interviewer. But do this subtly, or in a ninja-like manner if you will.
Mirroring a nod or a subtle shift in posture can create common ground between you and the interviewer.
